The end is in sight!!!! The big girls finished up VBS and loved everything about their week with friends. I took Dani back to the dentist so they could seal her bottom molars and she did an awesome job. She cried a little on the last one, but they said they expected her to cry through the entire thing so they were impressed. This week Dani was also moving and climbing and trying to follow the girls every chance she had. She was spending far more time out of her TARDIS chair than in and we were happy to see that. Her upper body must be getting so strong from dragging that cast around. As you can see from the photo above the cast isn’t really slowing her down. On Sunday of this week Dani had a pretty tough day. She was clearly frustrated with the cast and ready to be done. She pounded on the cast quite a bit and even said, “Dooon wan it!!!”

Amelie, Grammie and Nadia playing Operation (with Dani in the back)

Grammie "playing" a Hello Kitty themed version of Trouble with Dani.

Grammie came over for her weekly play date with the girls and as always they had fun. It was really cute that Dani was pretending to play this game with Grammie because she has seen us play it so much with the big girls. Dani is always watching us and this was adorable proof of it.

Nadia playing with Dani
Nadia came up with a fun game for her and Dani to play. I have no idea what the rules were, but they were giggling a lot.

I check the front of Dani's cast at almost every diaper change just in case. I recently found these.

Nadia's Human Lung Model

We just started a Magic School Bus study of the human body and the first experiment was to make a model of a human lung. Nadia thought it was great.

This week started much like the rest – we were rejoicing that another week had past and gearing up for the big girls to go to VBS. It was going to be the first year in 8 that I hadn’t volunteered, but I needed to be home with Dani. Dani was continuing to spend more time on the floor exercising and giggling with her sisters while trying to join in their fun.

Dani had her first visit to the dentist and as we suspected she needed some work done. All four molars on the bottom of her mouth had the start of a cavity so the dentist wanted to give them a super fluoride treatment and seal the teeth with cement as soon as we could come in again. Nadia and Amelie also had their teeth checked and everything was good.

The week took a turn when I received a call from my step-dad on Saturday night telling me that my Grandpa was gravely ill and not expected to live long. Mike and I talked about it and decided it would be good for me to go as soon as I could. I checked all the flights and on Sunday I purchased a ticket to fly to California on Monday morning and return on Tuesday night. When I arrived on Monday morning my Grandpa was up and I could hold his hand and talk to him. It was a great blessing to spend time with him over the two days and I am grateful I got to see him before he died.

When my Grandpa was too tired for any more visiting on Monday, my aunt Polly came and picked me up for lunch. It was a bright spot in the day to sit and visit with her outside on the patio at South Coast Deli. Later that night I went to see my brother who I missed seeing on our 2012 trip. On my second day there I went to see Grandpa in the morning, but he was very tired but I still talked with him for a little while and held his hand. When it was time for the nurses to help him I left and went to have lunch with my mom at her office. After that my step dad and I went to see my Grandpa one more time so I could say goodbye and hug my Grandma one more time. Then I started my journey home after a whirlwind, emotional trip. I was very worried that Dani wasn’t going to do well with me being gone, but she did great and I am thankful for everyone who prayed for her while I was gone.

Week 7 in "The Cast"

The big girls had a great time at VBS while I was gone and during the rest of the week once I was home. The theme was Space and the Bible passage that it focused on was Genesis 1. Nadia told me over and over that even though she loved the skit, she missed me being one of the characters. I told her that maybe next year I would return to all my VBS activities of the past. I am thankful for all the members of our church who give their time and energy to make VBS happen each year.

This was one of the many places I found Dani exploring over the course of the week. The end is almost here!! WOO HOO!!!

Thankful Thursday

  • I am thankful that I had Michael Petlow for my Grandpa. He was larger than life and one of the most charismatic people I have ever known.
  • I am thankful that I was able to take an emergency flight to California last week to see him a few days before he died.
  • I am thankful that he knew who I was and even cracked a few jokes as I sat holding his hand.
  • I am thankful that he lived such a long and amazing life.
  • I learned to swing dance from him and I know my love of big band and The Rat Pack music came from him.
  • I learned to be entrepreneurial and how to work a crowd from watching him as a small child.

Michael Andrew Petlow

91 years young, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family at his home on June 27, 2014.

Mike lived the American Dream. He was a man of many talents and many interests. He was a charismatic man with a genuine personality and unbelievable intellect. He was tenacious and a self-taught man with a desire to conquer the unknown; he valued the pursuit of knowledge. He was an entrepreneur, a restaurateur, a philanthropist, but above all else, he was a family man. He was proud of his family and his family meant the world to him; not a day went by that he didn’t make that known. Mike’s love for his family coupled with his warm and kind-hearted nature gave him the ability to touch people, near and far, and it’s this love that stemmed from his family that made everyone feel welcomed and a part of his family.

He was born July 4, 1922 in Fort William, Ontario, Canada to Catharyna and Andrew Petlow. Mike left high school after the 10th grade and worked as a deckhand on the SS Canadian and the Lethbridge, canaller ships that plied the Great Lakes from Fort William to Montreal. From 1942 to 1945, Mike served in the Royal Canadian Army stationed on Prince Rupert Island in British Columbia. He returned to his hometown after his military service and earned an Ontario Provincial Certificate in Accounting. On June 7, 1947 Mike married the love of his life, Jennie Clara Syroid, and they were blessed with three sons: Gary, Brian, and Andrew. Together they opened the Columbia Grill on a cold, snowy winter’s day in 1953 and continued its operation until finally selling it in 1974. Being the entrepreneur that he was, he also opened The Millionaire Drive-In, a drive-in restaurant that served delicious hamburgers, Sno-Cap Root Beer, and had parking for sixty cars where his niece, Cathie, worked as one of the car hops. While Mike ran the restaurants, he was a member of the Canadian Restaurant Association of Canada and served as its director for five years.

To escape the extreme winters in Canada, Mike and Jennie “wintered” for six weeks in Desert Hot Springs each year and travelled extensively throughout Southern California. They planted their roots in beautiful Santa Barbara during “Fiesta Week” in 1964. In the late sixties, Mike and Jennie opened Toby’s Restaurant in two locations, Long Beach and Palm Springs. Bitten by the “real estate bug” Mike began investing in rental properties in the greater Santa Barbara area in the late sixties. In the early seventies, Mike joined the distinguished company of Pitts and Bachmann, Realtors, as a real estate agent and later became a loan officer for Great Western Savings and Loan, helping many Santa Barbara families buy their first home. Mike’s love for real estate eventually evolved into the founding of his own business, Columbia Property Management, where he purchased rental properties for single-family residences. His youngest son, Andrew, continues to run and grow his business to this day.

During his initial years as a California resident, Mike developed a deep sense of patriotism for America which led to him and his wife becoming naturalized citizens on December 15, 1977. In turn, this led to a new passion for politics. He was a major fundraiser for the Republican Party in Santa Barbara County starting with the “Reagan Roundup” at Monty Robert’s “Flag is up Farms” in Santa Ynez. He was also part of the welcoming committee at the airport hanger when Queen Elizabeth visited Santa Barbara to meet with President Reagan and tour “Rancho del Cielo” (his California ranch dubbed the Western White House). He worked on campaigns for President Reagan, President George H. W. Bush, and President George W. Bush and Governors Pete Wilson, George Deukmejian, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. He also rallied for candidates in other statewide races and local elections. He served as an Alternate Delegate to the National Republican Conventions in Philadelphia and San Diego. He served as President of the Lincoln Club of Santa Barbara for seven years where his dear friend, Brooks Firestone, affectionately referred him to as “Captain America.” He was appointed by Governor Pete Wilson to serve on the 19th District Agricultural Association Board at Earl Warren Showgrounds and he graciously accepted the appointment. From 1992 to 1993, he served as President of the Santa Barbara-Puerto Vallarta Sister Cities Committee, and for over 25 years, he and his wife Jennie traveled to Puerto Vallarta once a year; he was even presented the “Key to the City” in the Puerto Vallarta News Paper. Soon Puerto Vallarta became another hometown for Mike and his Puerto Vallarta friends became part of his family.

Mike was a generous man and he loved being involved. He was a Shriner for 58 years and an Ancient, Free, and Accepted 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite for 59 years. In 1963 he served as President of the Lakehead Shrine Club and directed the Shrine Circus for three years when it came to town. He also was a charter member of the Lakehead Shrine Motor Patrol and took part in many Shrine parades and conventions. He was also a member of the Santa Barbara Elks Lodge #613 for 32 years. Mike’s love for helping everyone in need led to his involvement in various other community organizations including the Santa Barbara Transition House, Friends of the Lobero, and Music Academy of the West. Mike’s love for politics and philanthropic causes was only rivaled by his love for his native Canada and hockey. He loved the two so much that when Wayne Gretzky joined the Los Angeles Kings in 1988 he was by far their biggest fan.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Anne Martin. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Jennie and sons: Gary (Debora), Brian (Stephanie), and Andrew (Carolyn). He also leaves behind seven grandchildren: Sam (Kim), Stefani (James), Louanne (Michael), Michael, Michelle, Carter, and Justin; and six great-grandchildren: Nadia, Logan, Amelie, Verity, Ashtyn, and Danielle; and his dear niece Cathie Martin and grand-niece Bonnie Aguiar.

Mike’s love of dancing and Big Band Jazz music, and his zest for life touched us all. He was a proud, honorable, and wise man and he would light up any room he walked into. He was an extraordinary individual and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. We will remember him fondly and cherish the impact he has had on all of us. Above all, we will always remember what Mike always said: “The best is yet to come!”

In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care of Santa Barbara. His family will hold a private memorial service with arrangements entrusted to Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Chapels.

The day after Amelie’s birthday party our friends who live around the corner had their 4th birthday party and it was “Frozen” themed. Nadia and Amelie had a great time and the birthday girls’ mother, Hannah, did the most awesome job on the decorations and food – I loved everything about it! I think my two favorite things were “Kristoff’s Ice Blocks” which was blue jello cut in rectangles and “Anna’s Frozen Hearts” that were white chocolate dipped strawberries cut in heart shapes.

The party was at My Gym, for little kids. Mike got Dani settled on a railing so that she could see all the kids and the stuff they were playing. I think her favorite part of the party was the food because she had two pieces of pizza, grapes (“Frozen Trolls”) and a cupcake!

For Father’s Day we decided to try and go to Cotton Patch because we had some gift cards. Mike and I were trying to figure out how we could take Dani and have her sit upright because it would be a long meal trying to hold her with the heavy and very hot cast. Mike asked if we still had the black booster seat from when Nadia was little and I said yes. It’s made out of a strong foam material and once we were at the restaurant we asked them for a booth because they have wooden backs. We flipped the booster over and propped Dani up and it worked perfectly! I had to keep one hand on her throughout the meal (because I was afraid she would tip forward in her excitement), but it was worth it to get to eat out!

June 12-18, 2014

The biggest change this week was that Dani wanted to be out of her TARDIS chair more and more to get on the floor and explore. It is a major workout for her to get around, but she is so determined! Her upper body was getting stronger and stronger and she started to eat more again from all the sudden activity. The doctors at Scottish Rite had told us to expect this around week 5, so it was good to see her doing the things they expected. We had made it more than halfway with no major spills or diaper leaks so I was feeling good.

June 12-18, 2014

Dani does NOT like to sit still for the cast cooler so we started to give her conversation hearts or smarties to keep her from crying or moaning in misery. The cooler doesn’t hurt her and it works great to get the stinky sweat out, but she is like any other 2 year old – she wants to be free!
