Mentoring Joy

When I started mentoring A this January I told him about our adoption “just in case” we got our referral during the school year. He was very interested and wanted to see her photo right then and hasn’t really brought it up since.

Then 2 weeks ago we are working on a Mother’s Day craft together and he says, “Miss Louanne, why can’t your babies momma keep her? Doesn’t she have enough money?” So I go into a very 7 year old explanation about China being a different country and they have different rules and it’s likely that she doesn’t have enough money. He seemed cool with that and we went back to coloring.

Then he says, “Well, I am glad I am not adopted, I would miss my mom.” So I say, “That’s good, I am glad you love your mom, but not everyone can have that.” So he looks at me real sweet and says, “But you will be your babies REAL momma now right?” “Right.” Back to coloring we go as I blink back tears.

A few minutes later in a worried voice he says, “Miss Louanne, you’re not going to be able to feed her!” “What?” (I am totally confused- duh) He then points at his chest and says, “You KNOW!!!” I just busted out laughing because I realized he was talking about breast feeding. So I explained to him about formula and he said, “Oh so that goes in a bottle like a mom’s milk? Cool.”

The kid just cracks me up! Tomorrow is our last day for this school year and I am sad, but hope that I have helped him this year. He keeps saying he is telling his mom that they can’t move so I can be his mentor next year too. I should have been keeping a journal of the funny things he has said to me this semester. He is really smart and asks some great questions, but he is always trying to work a “deal” with me for candy or Happy Meals. So I told him he could get Happy Meals for good behavior grades. Took him about 5 weeks to work his way up from U’s, but he gets better every week. This will be our 3rd week in a row for a happy meal – he got his best grades ever last week.

Guess what his problem is? Talking too much in class!!! Could he have a better mentor? ROFL. We talk about respect for teachers every week. We talk about when you can talk – at recess, PE, Lunch. He likes that I used to get in trouble for talking in class and had to learn to control myself. He tells me every week that he is going to do better and he has been doing better every week.

Being a part of KIDS HOPE this year has been a great joy. Not only to see what has happened with A, but with all the other mentors and their children. Children who just need someone to say, “I believe in you. I know you can do it.” And to be faithful and be there every week. It’s a beautiful thing.

Happy Mother’s Day!!

To my mom. I thought your gift was cool, but didn’t mean to make you cry 🙂 I gave her an apron with a photo of Michael, Michelle and I the day Michelle graduated from college. It’s a great photo from the party afterward. And it looks really good on the apron.

To Grammie. You are the best!

To all the other mother’s that I love. I won’t list you because I am bound to forget someone.

Last of all to the other “waiting mommies” like me. Have a great day!

Thankful Thursday

It’s already Thursday again! So I am thankful that it’s the 10th and a third of the month is gone. We are that much closer to referral!

Yesterday I was a chaperone for the 2nd grade field trip to the zoo. I had the kid I mentor, plus one other KHUSA kiddo and 2 other boys. So today I wanted to post about being thankful for how AMAZING everything is to little kids. They just get so excited about stuff that adults take for granted. All day long I had 4 boys screaming “Miss Louanne, come look at this! Miss Louanne did you see that? Miss Louanne come over here.” They were just so excited to have an adult running around with them and being excited with them.

They wanted me to see the biggest spider ever and whoa that thing was huge. But we did find out that there has never been a recorded human death from a tarantula. The boys thought that was amazing. I told Mike the spider was so big it looked like something that would be on a movie set. Fake! But then it moved. Hee hee.

I am thankful for the school letting us join them this year with KIDS HOPE. I can’t believe that next week is the end for this school. What a blessing the program has been.

I am thankful and forever grateful for the 34 people at my church that were involved with the KIDS HOPE program this year. Prayer partners, mentors and subs, you are the best!!!

I am thankful for all the people that have sponsored WV children in the last 2 months. The Girls Campaign has gone great and the lives of the children and their families will be changed for eternity. God Bless you all and all the sponsors who have joined up since I became a Child Ambassador in 2005.

Exciting Summer!

I am blessed with all the wonderful people coming to visit this summer. Starting right after Memorial Day Randy, Jessica and the girls will be here with us for several days. I have never seen Evie and she’s already 18 months old! Man time flies.

Then my cousin Jennifer will be here for 3 days. She and I are the same age and we are a “bit” older than all the other cousins, so we are very close. I adore her and this is the first time she has been up to Fort Worth for a visit. I usually get to see her when I am down in Houston visiting my dad’s family. She is coming up for the baby shower and of course at the baby shower there will be a lot of wonderful friends and family to visit with that I haven’t seen for a while.

Then the first week of June we should see Nadia’s face for the first time. We are going to be on cloud nine and for those that think I am hyper on a normal day, watch out!

And for the guests traveling the farthest…….Jessica and Amy (my dearest friends from high school) are coming out here June 21st. I am soooooooo excited. One will be flying in from NJ and the other from CA. Meet in the middle for girls weekend! Woo hoo! I have been trying to remember, but I don’t think that we have all been together since our friend Staci got married. I have seen Amy multiple times and Jess multiple times and they saw each other most recently at Christmas, but I really don’t think we have all been together in almost 10 years. Whoa! Mike says he is going to be at the office for 93 hours that weekend! Hee hee. I am thrilled to show them Texas and have tried to convince them they won’t melt as it won’t be July yet and it won’t be over 100. LOL.

Then around the beginning of August we should be headed to China. WOO HOO!
